ABSTRACT

Chyawanprash is an ayurvedic dosage forms which belongs to avaleha group. Chyawanprash is recognized as a compound formulation of Indian Medicinal System. At present no official standards are available for the standardization of this preparation. So, there is need to incorporate certain parameters of evaluation on the basis of W.H.O. guidelines. Three popular samples designated by us as A, B and C of Chyawanprash were procured from the market and evaluated with respect to toxicological studies which includes evaluation of pesticide residue content, heavy meal content (like arsenic, lead and cadmium) and total aerobic microbial count/ bio-burden level. All the brands of Chyawanprash fall within the specification of heavy metals and pesticide residue given by W.H.O. guidelines but the total viable aerobic microbial count was found to cross the limit given by W.H.O. guidelines in sample A, whereas other samples designated as B and C showed the presence of microbial count within the limit. However, it was found that all the brands including sample A are free from pathogenic microorganisms viz. E. coli, S. typhi, S. aureus. From the studies, it can be concluded that the bacterial growth in total aerobic count is due to genera Bacillus as a common contaminant which has been confirmed by gram staining and this contaminant may be from air. These studies may be utilized as one of the tool to perform quality control checks of Chyawanprash in order to ensure the safe use of Chyawanprash.
